 The article said literature, research, and writing 5 paragraph essays were required in the English SOLs. Whatever the emphasis on literature and research, it seems to me that students can learn a lot about style and organization from working on five-paragraph essays. In any event, short writing can be very effective. How many paragraphs was the Gettysburg Address?

  don 't be tricked; we aren't researching or writing research papers for  SOLs 
in VA.  FIve paragraphs, five sentences in each.  First and  fifth sentence 
match but aren't exactly the same.  Middle three for  details.  Pass.  Name 
someone you admire and tell why.  THat's  the 11th grade prompt.  And it has 
been 
in years past.
