Re: telling the Feds to kiss off
Funny thing about those lawsuits. The NAACP argued in federal court in
Connecticut that states should enforce the letter and spirit of NCLB.
Just recently NAACP and other civil rights groups petitioned the
Appeals Court to reject the "unfunded mandate" argument in the
NEA/Pontiac case. It's almost like they don't buy the argument that
NCLB harms poor children and minority children and is destroying public
education. Set them straight Lucido and Campbell.

An opt out campaign is going to be initiated by CalCARE (see their
website) and
Educators and PArents Against Test Abuse in CA. The March 28-29 Chavez
Literacy
conference at Fresno State will be a day of information and a sort of
"kick
off".

I need your help. I'm writing a piece on what various states and
districts are doing RE: rejecting NCLB either by forgoing Title 1
money, suing the Feds, refusing to administer tests, or other ways.
Here are some examples:
- DuPage County Illinois school district considering not
administering mandatory state exams to students who haven't yet
mastered English
- The state of Connecticut is bucking NCLB via a lawsuit - anyone
know the status of this?
- Virginia is on the verge of pulling out, too - status?
- the lawsuit that the NEA brought against the Feds, which was
initially thrown out of court, is now back in play - status?
- And then there's Utah - status?
What are some other examples?
Thanks.
Peter
