Rick,
I absolutely agree with your argument that the arts are important in
themselves and I hope against hope that every community understands that
and is willing to support them on their own merits - because they are
just as important in my view as math, reading, etc. However, I am not
about to give up the arts because some people don't believe the way that
I do so I will use whatever I have to keep them - even if it means
trying to "prove" to a community that only seems to care about test
scores - that those scores will be better because of the arts...at
least, I get to keep what I know kids need...

always play baroque musical chamber music during testing--the body
thinks, NOT
the mind! the mind plays *catch up* ball to the body, bit that's another
dimension to all this..
