Ahh, but are you for HIGH STANDARDS in the arts?
Every student must be able to master an instrument at a professional level.
Every student must be able to sketch a recognizable sketch of a human
face in at least 3 different media, using appropriate technology.
Afterall, how can we have two Americas, one that is skilled enough to make
a living at music, and another that is not proficient?
How can we tolerate Americans who can't tell the difference between
classical and impressionist art, or Mozart from Picasso?
I propose that we deny high school diplomas to anyone who can't play a
concerto, choreograph and arrange a broadway muscial, or know the difference
between a pentatonic or a mixolydian scale.
That's the thing about the high stakes tests, which would probably flunk
out a good percentage of professional musicians and artists who actually
have a higher market value than the average citizen.

Rick,
I absolutely agree with your argument that the arts are important in
themselves and I hope against hope that every community understands that
and is willing to support them on their own merits - because they are
just as important in my view as math, reading, etc. However, I am not
about to give up the arts because some people don't believe the way that
I do so I will use whatever I have to keep them - even if it means
trying to "prove" to a community that only seems to care about test
scores - that those scores will be better because of the arts...at
least, I get to keep what I know kids need...

Of course, I couldn't argue against your point, Karen, as a math
teacher, I
always play baroque musical chamber music during testing--the body
thinks, NOT
the mind! the mind plays *catch up* ball to the body, bit that's another
dimension to all this..
