This article was in this morning's Columbus Dispatch.
Austin, Texas-
Gov. George W. Bush of Texas could not name several foreign leaders when he
was hit with a pop quiz by a Boston television reporter, according to a
report by the television station on Wednesday night.
Andy Hiller, the reporter for WHDH-TV who administered the impromptu test,
asked Bush in an interview on Wednesday if he could identify the top person
in power in four countries or regions that have recently encountered turmoil
and been in the news: Taiwan, Chechnya, India, and Pakistan.
Bush, the front runner for the Republican presidential nomination, semmingly
knew the answer for Taiwan, Lee Teng-hui, but not the others.
The governors spokeswoman, Karen Hughes, said Bush's trouble with Hiller's
questions proved nothing about his fitness for the presidency.
"For the American people", Hughes said "the relevant question isn't how many
names of foreign leaders a candidate knows, but whether he has the strategic
vision for America's role in the world."
