I can't think of worse advice for someone who wants to learn about
assessment. Stephen Jay Gould is a wonderful writer and he has written some
great books about paleoentology. I would in particular recommend _Wonderful
Life_ which is about the Burgess Shale deposits. The _Mismeasure of Man_ is
a book about measurement, a topic about which Gould knows very little. It
is amazing how an author could pack so much misinformation into one short
book. Most of it consists of an expose of some of the ideas of the founders
of the measurment field, much of it inaccurate, and the rest already well
known. His central argument is analogous to a rejection of all modern
chemistry because early chemist were alchemist convinced they could turn
base metals into gold. There are so many extensive critiques of the book
around I won't go into details here.
