Dear Friends and Colleagues:

I have just confirmed that the New York Times has cancelled Richard
Rothstein's weekly column of analysis on education issues.

This is most unfortunate. Rothstein's column was one of the very few pieces
of high profile education analysis in the country. It was also the very best
in terms of the quality of what he wrote, and of his sympathy to and
understanding of the classroom teacher's perspective. He had a willingness to
be honest about where the facts took him that was quite rare in the field of
education, and to be treasured.

I believe that it is essential that the New York Times receive a large volume
of protest mail from classroom teachers and others in education. We must not
allow such a decision to take place without protest. I would also urge you to
speak to others in the field of education you know, and ask them to make a
similiar protest.

Letters should be addressed to:

and

Power concedes nothing without a demand.
It never has, and it never will.
If there is no struggle, there is no progress.
Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation are men who
want crops without plowing the ground. They want rain without thunder and
lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its waters.
