Mickey,

This was an interesting exercise.

Observations:

Since 1997 the number of AP exams written nationally increased by 53.4%
The average scores for ALL groups declined from 3.02 to 2.95.
Given an increase of 53.4%, .07 drop is most likely good news.

In New York, since 1997 the number of AP exams written increased by 37.3%.
The average scores for ALL groups declined from 3.02 to 3.01. Given the national average, one can hypothesize that NY isn't keeping up with the national trends.

Very interesting stuff.

In VA, our state DOE made a big to-do over rising AP scores/grades - whatever you call them. Not that they actually are rising, mind you. At least, not overall and not on quite a few of the tests I looked more closely at. And, compared to the rise in students nationally participating in AP, VA participation is flat.

But then as I was looking at the national report, I noticed that WAshington's percentage of grades 3 or up is down from 2000 to 2001 as is Texas, Massachusetts, California, AZ, and Ohio (those are the ones I checked for specifically). I wasn't sure if you other state folks are following these tests or if they are even on the radar screen in your state.

Anyway, I graphed a bunch of VA/national data to show the differences and the graphs are very graphic (ha). Our state makes a big deal over them, thus, we've looked over the data to tell the rest of the story.

And does anyone know how to put graphs on a website?
