I went to my job today (don't tell my Mom I'm an education activist; she thinks I'm the accompanist for the community college choirs) and a student was wearing a shirt that caught my eye. I asked him if I could read it, and he replied "Sure." So I did. And it read "I passed the taas test and all I got was this shirt..." He then turned around and showed me the caption on the back which read "...and a diploma from Alvin High School." I asked him if they handed these to students who passed the Biggie Wow Test, and his reply made me want to vomit. "No, they give these out to people who are out of dress code (uniforms in my district, although they weasel out of the law requiring schools to purchase them for poorer students by calling it "standardized dress code"). They are supposed to bring them back, but I guess my little brother didn't do it (laugh). I got it out of his closet." He then rolled his eyes and told me he thought it was all pretty stupid. If only it were no more than "stupid"...
