Editorial: NCLB reauthorization should include national standards.
USA Today (10/31, page 10A) editorialized that while "basic competencies
transcend state lines, you wouldn't know it from the nation's existing patchwork
of education standards." The lack of national standards "hampers the federal No
Child Left Behind law, which demands that all children perform at grade level by
the year 2014." Now, "30 states are cooperating on setting similar graduation
standards, and 13 have settled on a common Algebra II curriculum and test. With a
little pressure from parents and educators, there's no good reason those numbers
couldn't reach 50."
