Fair enough. You're lucky to be in a classroom. I started to fight this stuff
from there three years before there was an NCLB (Chicago was a pioneer in all
that nonsense) and have been exiled (and blacklisted) from public school
teaching since February 1, 1999. Oh, and they sued us for a million dollars,
forced us to raise and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to beat that back in
court, and tried repeatedly to bankrupt us with one last legal attack. And,
by the way, both the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Lawyers
Guild refused to help, so we had to raise all the dollars we spent on our
lawyers -- all the way to seeing "CERT DENIED" at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Did anyone ever teach you a version of history that said struggles that
mattered would be easy? This is a long fight. And after we've defeated NCLB, the
people who hate public schools and democracy (and the dupes who went along with
the past quarter century of teacher bashing, public schools bashing, and other
right wing stuff) will continue because they have billions of dollars behind
their lies, and all we have are the majority of the people and the truth.
