Re: Report: No Senate Action on NCLB Reauthorization in 2007
Some time ago I posted here, asking whether it might be possible to get a
moratorium on sanctions. While I am glad we have been blessed with the gift
of more time to spread the message about the destructivness of high stakes
testing, I too would really like to see us press for a freeze on sanctions.
It is completely justified to do so and might help keep a spotlight on the
absurdities and injustices now occurring under the present accountability
provisions of the law.

2007
I can only post this to the ARN-L list, as I am not a member of the other
lists to which Bob sent his message.
This raises an urgent issue. This almost certainly means that the
Education Dept will be funded under a continuing resolution. I presume
that without some kind of intervention, the funding level for NCLB related
activities will continue at the current insufficient level at the same
time as the clock continues to move on sanctions. Is there any way we
can pressure people, especially on the Senate side, to try to intervene to
freeze the clock on punitive sanctions until reauthorization and funding
issues get fully addressed? Otherwise the damage of the past few years
will merely be intensified to a point where recovery will, for many
schools, be nigh impossible.
I have forwarded a message to that effect to those Hill staffers and
Members with whom I have ongoing contact. But I am wondering if we need
some kind of more concerted effort?
