I don't doubt that it is occurring some and I certainly don't condone it.
Especially because we teachers are setting an example for children. However,
the far greater "crime" is an unjust law (NCLB) that punishes schools and
teachers for "failing" to meet standardized test performance targets that are not
humanly possible for them to meet. No matter how fine a school, if even ONE
single subgroup fails to meet the almighty and arbitrary AYP, the entire
school is sanctioned and finds itself on the hit list. And by the way, who in the
hell is ADEQUATE??

NCLB requires states to provide additional help and resources to schools
where many children are not achieving as well as they should. If you want to
call that "punishment," more power to you. But most people would not see it
that way. Most people would find it entirely reasonable that states provide
additional help and resources to schools where many children are not achieving.
Some schools desperately need improvement and it is vitally important that
states do that. That is why NAACP argued in the Connecticut case that states
should enforce the "letter and spirit" of NCLB. The propaganda spread on
this list is disgraceful and a disservice to children and parents and to public
education.
