"Experience, "conversations," "excursions," and so on become kinds of tests for privileged children, because they give them information about what the norms are. Children who do not have these advantages need better teaching. I was in an inner-city high school and a ninth-grader asked what a footnote was. It's nice to have educated parents who have books around the house that have footnotes in them and tell their children how to navigate footnoes, but it's also nice to have teachers tell you what a footnote is and give you books to read that have them.
