Re: monty neill op ed on overhauling nclb
I avoid replying to Art who either does not understand or does not want to
understand.
The FEA proposal is for a rate of improvement based on the rate of
improvement of strong Title I schools. The goal remains proficiency. If you
want details, the FEA report Redefining Accountability and the FEA
legislative recommendations are at www.fairtest.org and
www.edaccountability.org.

It's also another way of saying that fewer schools should be below
average.
?
But the real question is why should Title I schools be the standard in the
first place.? We want children in Title I schools to reach the same
standards as children in more advantaged schools.? Why hold ourselves to
lower expectations for these children?? The Monty/FEA proposals stand 40+
years of ESEA on its head. Imagine the consequences of applying the same
logic to other civil rights -? for example, by saying that the standard
for integrating the schools should be the 65th percentile of Mississippi
schools five years after Brown.? What is at play here is clearly not the
best interests of parents and children, but an attack on NCLB at their
expense. That is not right.

This sounds like another way of saying everyone should be above average.?
?
All schools should improve as fast as the school whose rate of
improvement is next in line to be in the top third.?
