What specifics are you asking for and about? We still have pictures from the
press conference at their unveiling eight years (or so) ago. With all the
hoopla back then, the question can now be asked whether all that has produced
anything of long-term value for the schools that got them -- or was it just
another way of sidestepping the traditional paths to the principalship and beyond?
My view?
The traditional path in Illinois (which, by the way, is still the path in all
of Illinois except Chicago) required years of classroom work as a teacher,
course work and a masters; and an examination. No short cuts because the
apprenticeship was necessary (just as in any other highly skilled job; I always used
the five-year electrical workers' apprenticeship as an imperfect analogy).
Once Chicago deregulated a lot (and expanded deregulation via charter schools
and other exotic alternatives to traditonal public schools) almost anything
was possible.
