What is the alternative route? Did they take a page from the Florida
Doomsday for Students Book? Legal actions in behalf of students with
disabilities are historically more successful than those advocating for
"regular" students, so Florida exempts students with disabilities from
having to pass the grade 10 FCAT if their IEP committee recommends it on
the grounds that the disability makes it impossible for the student to
show what he/she knows on the FCAT. The rest are left to swing from the
FCAT gallows.

The Maryland BOE did not vote to abolish their exit exams, but they did
approve an alternative route to graduation, much better than nothing.

Md. continues secondary-school assessments


Students who fail can complete project instead, state board voted today

The state Board of Education voted today to continue the four High
School Assessments but to also give students who fail the option of
completing a project instead.

The board voted 8 to 4 in approving the measure.

Most of Maryland's school system superintendents had supported making
passing the exams in algebra, English, American government and biology a
requirement for graduation, beginning in 2009.

But opposition had grown across the state this year as the deadline
nears and large percentages of students, particularly minorities,
special-education students and those who are learning English, have
failed the tests.
