CALL, WRITE OR FAX CONGRESS NOW:
OVERHAUL NCLB
Have you called or written your Congressional representatives about NCLB?
Congressional committees in the Senate and House are about to discuss and vote on a new Elementary and Secondary Education Act/No Child Left Behind.
Will they make the changes necessary to move from a law that hurts education to one that helps? Maybe.
Minor tinkering won't fix the law's reliance on high-stakes testing, unrealistic achievement targets, and punitive mandates. The modest changes in the House Education Committee's discussion draft and those under consideration in the Senate HELP Committee will not solve these problems.
But - we are told that members of Congress are not hearing from their constituents.
FOR THEM TO HEAR YOUR VIEWS, YOU MUST CALL, WRITE OR FAX!
Please call or write today. Tell them why ESEA/NCLB must be overhauled. Be concrete. If you are a parent, teacher, student or citizen, tell them what NCLB means to your school.
Then tell them to consider the Joint Statement on NCLB and the proposals of the Forum on Educational Accountability.
First, call your own Representative and Senators. If you have a bit more energy, call or write the House Education Committee and the Senate HELP Committee.
To find the phone, fax or mail addresses or your representatives, go to www.house.gov and to www.senate.gov. If you are telephoning, you also can reach members (via staff) at their DC offices, through the Capitol switchboard: Senate is 202-224-3121; House is 202-225-3121. Ask to speak to the staffer who handles education; you can leave a voice mail. Note: mail is slow. Phone is fast; faxes, like a letter, let you provide some detail.
To reach the education committees:
House Education Committee, 2181 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC 20515; Phone: 202-225-3725; Fax - Majority (Dem) 202-226-5398, minority (Repub) 303-225-9571
Senate HELP Committee, 428 Senate Dirksen Office Building, Washington, DC 20510; Phone (202) 224-5375; fax 202-224-5128
The Joint Statement and FEA materials are at www.fairtest.org and www.edaccountability.org.
