This does not mean that they make unbiased assessments of the kids they know.
David Sadker has published for years that his research shows teachers
consistently give higher grades to girls based on classroom behavior rather
than educational achievement. In addition, there is some interesting
research published in "Research on the Teaching of English" looking at the
writing of sixth grade students. Teachers were asked to grade writing
samples with all identify characteristics removed. Teachers who thought the
sample was by a female student gave significantly higher grades than teachers
who thought the writing was by a male student. This suggest that student
identity (or even perception of identity) may play a more significant role in
evaluation than actual student performance.
