I think that parents should be able to view testing materials used by their children. This does, however, create a logistical headache for the schools, which have to ferret out the materials and then arrange for the parent to examine them, all the while maintaining the privacy of other students and the security of the materials.

The attorney for the Pinellas County [St. Petersburg] school board has
issued a memo asserting a parent's right to view her son's FCAT answer sheet
and test booklet. I've posted the memo in our FCAR Forum files section
(URL below). It's PDF and takes a while to load.

The memo relies on The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) as
well as Florida law to establish the right to access.

In a St. Petersburg Times article today, DOE spokeswoman Joann Carrin says
that previous requests have been denied but "we have to look at this request
and then decide what our response will be."
