The attachment in the forward from Carol Bucheri is The Eleventh Bracey
Report on the Condition of Public Education. It's a PDF file and will
appear in about a week in the October Kappan.
It opens with Susan, George and Alfie, and it's all down hill from there:
"Testing, Testing, and More Testing, New NAEP Data, No Child Left Behind,
New International Data, Vouchers, R.I.P., Charter Schools, EMO's, and Where
It Could All End Up."
As with last year, the Rotten Apples will be put directly on the web site,
while the Golden Apples appear in the report. The PDK board took a "moral"
stance, but I think it was the threatened lawsuit from Bill Daggett that put
fear in their hearts.
Rotten Apple recipients this year include the usual suspects: Checker, Bill
Bennett (both alone and together), The Business Roundtable, Abigail
Thernstrom, Jeanne Allen, John Glenn and his commission on math and science
education, Tamara Henry, Jay P. Greene, Lou Gerstner (alone and also with
Tommy Thompson), and Thomas J. Engibous, and Edward B. Rust.
Engibous is CEO of Texas Instruments, Rust CEO of State Farm Insurance.
Rottens will be up by the end of next week. Most of this week is devoted to
getting into and out of Dodge City, Kansas.
