"According to the College Board, which oversees the SAT, graders of the new
short-essay test will be required to have a college degree and at least
three years' teaching experience, including a high school or college course
in the past five years that requires writing."

amount of money for those skills or what!!!!????

Sorry, sarcasm showing"

Your point is well taken Karen. Most people with those credentials will find
little time for such an activity at $20 an hour.

The College Board would be better off employing a computer scoring model
utilizing the one of the various AI essay evaluation applications that are
currently available.

Not only would this reduce the costs and the turnaround time, but it would
also provide consistent, objective scoring. Something rarely seen from
human scorers.

I know some people have issues with using a computer for this, but it has
inherent advantages that cannot be ignored. Writing prompts on large scale
assessments are formulaic in nature employing the typical, state your
thesis, support your thesis with evidence and examples, and restate your
thesis in a conclusion model. Given this fact, the use of automated scoring
makes sense.

At least using writing prompts and encouraging extended responses that
require students to think in a more authentic task oriented mode is a step
in the right direction.
