Diane, A response to your query would take a lot of time. I would suggest getting ahold of What You Should Know About the War Against America's Public Schools and reading the very brief, 6-page chapter 2 in which I contrast the communal, democratic view of education against the market oriented, it's-the-same-as-providing-someone-with-a-Big-Mac view. Most of the chapter I let others--Peter Cookson, Jeffrey Henig and Benjamin Barber--do most of the talking. As for why people without children in public schools need them, well, they're the future. Even experdiently, they're the future--my Social Security doesn't depend on what I paid into the system, it depends on what younger people put in so it's expediently in my interest to do what I can to insure that younger people are equipped to get family-supporting wage jobs. Plus, a commitment to the community means you'd like to see schools and families producing people you'd enjoy being around. JB
