I like this video...well done. For a video that deals with education policy
(an issue that receives far less attention than it ought to) it seems to me
it has gotten a good many views in just four days. Of course this is totally
unscientific but if such a pace were to continue it could have over 11,000
views in a month's time. Not enough but not too shabby for a video on
education. I think the video that Susan O. and Co. did (Test the Kids) is
awfully good too. The more of these we can get out there, the better, no?
Including student voices was good and I agree with Lisa that it would be
wise for future versions to include parent voices. The more inclusive, the
better. And what a good backdrop the little red school house is......just
think of all the propoganda and disinformation that cutesy little entrance
to the US DOE represents...what a vision of hypocrisy!
Yes, the more the public learns about NCLB, the more they will dislike it.
Toward that end, here's just an idea for another video which you can take or
leave. How about a video that asks a series of "Did You Know?" questions,
perhaps even titled "NCLB: Did You Know?" Each powerful point could detail
one of the law's absurdities or false assumptions and be followed by "Does
This Make Sense?"

I tried to post a response to this earlier today, but it hasn't shown up.
Hope it doesn't show up twice.
Jerry,
I thought it was very good and persuasive to hear the educators and
students. I would love to see a parent or parents included in any future
versions. The proponents often try to discredit the NCLB opposition as
"special interests" opposed to accountability, which parents presumably want
so badly they're willing to accept this crazy law. The absence of parents'
voices (as well as some of the educators in the video talking about what
parents need to understand), may reinforce the idea that educators oppose,
but parents support this kind of accountability. Though I believe it's true
that many parents don't yet realize the negative impact this is having on
their kids' teachers and their kids themselves, there are also growing
numbers of parents like me who are outraged by this law precisely because we
feel it is harming our children's education.

There is now a 9:25 video about NCLB at www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSTzLILQx3c.
It was produced by a Fairfax County teacher, Katie Keier, and a videographer
friend, Joe Landreth. Let us know what you think--I'm sure constructive
feedback will be welcome. My initial understanding was that it was to dispel
ignorance about what the law actually said, and I spent my time talking
about the law's contents. The video has me talking about AYP, 100%
proficiency, and the choice option, but it seems to me it came out more
talking about the law's impacts which are not necessarily functions of the
law's provisions--e.g., test scores arriving late, high performing students
using the choice option, etc.
Other versions are anticipated which make more use of interviews with
students. Katie and Joe are on the EDDRA list so they'll automatically see
anything that turns up there. I can relay anything from LFA or ARN.
