Re: Bob Schaefer on CNN
CNN's America Morning show actually aired two long segments on the SAT
-- one on Monday, August 31 and the other on Tuesday, September 1.
Here's a link to the transcript for the show dealing with the big
business of testing and to some of the video CNN aired:
http://amfix.blogs.cnn.com/2009/09/01/educating-america-the-big-business-of-the-sat/
On a personal note, as someone who has been interviewed thousands of
times about testing issues by pretty much every major outlet in the
country, the CNN producer, Bob Ruff, and correspondent, Carole Costello
deserve kudos for diligent research, factual reporting, meticulous
production, and a huge investment in getting the story right.

Did anyone see the CNN spot yesterday with Bob Schaefer on SAT being big business? Like to hear some thoughts - perhaps this is a good time to let CNN know we need more coverage about the 'big business" control over education. hmmm..? anybody?

A first-second grade teacher in upstate New York has a good strategy. She send
teve Krashen's letter to a union official and asked for a meeting. She keeps up
stream of info to union leaders. Steve had written a lot of great letters. Use

ducation Secretary Duncan feels that the first priority in improving education
s more accountability and higher standards ("A $5 Billion Bet on Better
ducation," August 23).
he first priority is reducing poverty. The US has the highest rate of child
overty of all industrialized countries.
Poverty has a huge impact. Studies confirm that hunger, poor diet and lack of
eading material seriously affect academic performance. Gerald Bracey points out
hat US schools with fewer than 25% of children in poverty outscore all
ountries in the world in Math and Science. US children fall below the
nternational average only when 75% or more of the students in a school are
hildren of poverty.
There is room for improvement in education, but when all our children have=2
0the
dvantages that children from high-income families have, our schools will be
onsidered the best in the world.
Susan Ohanian puts it this way: No Child Left Unfed.

Dear Friends,
he Freedom in Education Meeting was very successful yesterday. I am hopeful for
he future as I felt the passion for children fill that room. There are many,
any, many people on our side---as evidenced just by the people on this
mailing. Multiply that times thousands. It's just a matter of uniting us, and I
m hopeful that this will happen. Notes will follow very soon. One thing we all
greed on was that HIGH STAKES TESTING MUST END and to uniformly respond to
hese ludicrous newspaper editorials that have been popping up lately. If we can
end each other the URL's for others we see in our localities, and then all
espond, they will not know what hit them. It's a
combined start! Read this
ditorial and then HAMMER that ed. dept. with letters! Mine is below the URL:
ttp://www.fresnobee.com/opinion/story/1619327.html
ear Editor,
etâs point out several obscene statements that the Beeâs editorial staff made
n the Sundayâs education editorial:
High stakes âtests are designed to measure studentsâ mastery of the conceptsâ.
o, they are designed by definition to create a statistical separation of scores
n purpose. Thus, you will never have the desired amount of children proficient.
-âWhen teachers teach to the test, they are teaching the standardsâ. Actually,
hen teachers are forced to teach to the test, they break the State Standards
or Teaching ed. code by not using multiple forms of evidence to evaluate kids.
t dehumanizes children and ignores their uniqueness.
Compared to whites, poor test scores by middle class Latinos or blacks
ndicates, âsomething about the way a school runs may be standing in the way of
hose students.â No, it indicates that the test questions are inherrently racist
hen they are designed. It will continue to paralyze those communities unless
hey demand better assessments.
he body of knowledge kids should have should be based on their identity,
nquiry, interaction, intitiative, imagination, intuition, and integrity from
chool. These are measured by performance, oral, project and portfolio
ssessments. People should demand these ideals for positive human di
versity.
