methodologies.
Dear colleagues:
Can I interest you in being part of a symposium I am putting together for
Puebla, Mexico (details below) on the historical interactions of technology
and environment? So far, I am happy to say that several Mexican/ist
colleagues have expressed interest, some of whom are working on water.
Ideally, the symposium would include papers in other Latin American
geographic and thematic specializations as well.
Warm regards,

Call for papers
In connection with the Coloquio Latinoamericano "Historia y Estudios
Sociales sobre la Ciencia y la Tecnología", organized by the Sociedad
Mexicana de Historia de la Ciencia y de la Tecnología and the Institutode
Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de
Puebla.
To be held in the city of Puebla, Mexico, 24-27 October 2007

Paper proposals are invited for the symposium “Interacciones entre la
tecnología y el ambiente: problemas y metodologías desde la historia”
(Interactions between technology and environment: historical problems and
methodologies)
Description:
This session will discuss change in the technologies for the appropriation
and transformation of the environment that prevailed historically in Latin
America. Of particular interest is the relationship between changes in the
technologies for the use of water, land, forests and other resources and the
shifting social and power relations among different social sectors before
and after the conquest, throughout the colonial period and after the
emergence of national states. The symposium could address several questions,
including (not exclusively) the following: Do technologies assist in
consolidating the control over resources of any given social sector? Can we
think of the techniques for the management and use of the environment
themselves as another terrain on which struggles over access to resources
are fought among different sectors of the population? Does the environment
have agency, and, if so, how does it appear and how do we explore it? How
does landscape and the changes that societies introduce in it influence the
shape of technologies for its apropriation? What is a viable time
perspective for the exploration of the interaction between technology and
environment -- is a longue durée approach required when dealing with
environmental transformations visible only over long periods of time? How
does a context of colonial domination influence the interactions between
technology and environment?
Colleagues working on various aspects of the historical interaction of
technology and environment in any region of Latin America are invited to
send paper proposals by May 10 to the address below. In the proposal, please
include the following information:
1. Name and institution of the author
2. Paper title
3. Abstract of 250 words or less
5. Brief CV with email and phone contact information
