Definitely look at the work of Ronald L. Grimes.
There is an article by him in ISLE, vol. 9, issue 1, 2002:
Ronald L. Grimes, "Performance Is Currency in the Deep World's Gift Economy: An Incantatory Riff for a Global Medicine Show"
The Earth Matters bibliography cites Szerszynski, Bronislaw, Wallace Heim and Claire Waterton, eds. #Nature Performed: Environment, Culture and Performance# (2004). I saw and heard Grimes PERFORM the above piece at a conference upon which the #Nature Performed# book is based. It felt as though the world changed a little bit!
