Dear ASLE Folks,

I want to point out a few new conference features/opportunities that have recently been (or will soon be) added to the conference web site at http://www.woffordcollege.org/asle/.

1) First, our opening plenary speaker on the evening of Tuesday, June 12, will be Bill McKibben. Noted Southern poet Fred Chappell has also joined our line-up of plenary speakers.

2) Second, we have added another pre-conference workshop:

Staying Alive: a workshop for academic professionals, led by John Tallmadge, independent scholar and literary/educational consultant. This workshop will focus on how to live an emotionally, ethically, and spiritually healthy life in academia no matter what happens. A slightly more detailed description will appear on the conference web site soon, and those interested are encouraged to contact John Tallmadge at jtallmadge@cinci.rr.com for more details.

(Our other workshops include Conjuring Place, A Workshop in Narrative Criticism, and Growing Your Own Literature: A Place-Based Publishing Workshop.)

3) The title of the pre-conference seminar led by Rob Figueroa has been slightly changed to "Exploring Environmental Identity from Environmental Justice." This change, along with the detailed description of the seminar, will appear on the web site soon. In the meantime, if you would like the description, please contact me (Karla) directly.

(The other seminars are on 1) International Nature-Oriented Literature and Ecocritical Theory and 2) Science Studies and Ecocriticism. We are also offering workgroups on the topics of
Criticism and Theory, Writing and Discourse, and Engagement and Activism)

PLEASE NOTE: Registration deadlines are January 15th for seminars and March 15th for workgroups and workshops. Although you must be registered for the conference to ATTEND any of these activities, you may register for them before you register for the conference (in all cases, you register by simply sending me an e-mail message asking me to reserve your spot,)

If you haven't yet checked out the rest of the seminar, workshop, and workgroup offerings, please take the time to do so as soon as you can — http://www.woffordcollege.org/asle/. If you are wondering about the differences in format between workgroups, seminars, and workgroups, again — please read the descriptions at http://www.woffordcollege.org/asle/.

Thanks!

Karla
