As much as I admire Thoreau, and also admire moose, the one that charged me and my family some years ago didn't look at all
like a "giant frightened rabbit," accept for the giant part. But I think Theroux (no relation, I presume) does raise a valid point about the "machoization" of Sarah Palin and what it says about the relationship between human and nature. Drill baby drill and all that.

Mary's right. Moose can be just as hostile as a super sized German Shepherd
who doesn't want you in the same yard. Cf. generally the moose in Gary
Paulsen's Hatchet. Thoreau's fine as far as he goes, which is a considerable
distance, but on moose he's wrong, as indeed he was on the Irish in America.
