Re: Thoreau on the Moose, Paul Theroux



In fairness to Thoreau, let's also remember that, in the essay "Ktaadn"
(found in the collection _The Maine Woods_), he writes:

"They [the moose] are sometimes dangerous to encounter, and will not
turn out for the hunter, but furiously rush upon him, and trample him to
death, unless he is lucky enough to avoid them by dodging round a tree."

Paulsen's Hatchet. Thoreau's fine as far as he goes, which is a
considerable
distance, but on moose he's wrong, as indeed he was on the Irish in
America.
