KEYNOTE SPEECH:

ART AND THE THREE R'S: CAN WE SPARE SOME CHANGE?
When taken out of the educational equation, art
affects every aspect of development; my goal is
to show how to use art as a tool for education
and not just decoration. - Milton Bowens, Artist

WRITING WORKSHOPS:

LEARNING SPACE SCIENCE THROUGH WRITING AND ART (Grades K-3)
Sally Feldman
Washington Elementary School, Richmond, West
Contra Costa Unified School District and BAWP
Teacher Consultant, NASA Curriculum Developer

Get the most out of your students by integrating
space science, art, and writing. Find out how to
teach the science content, expand thinking
through art, and glue it all together with a
strong writing piece. In this workshop we will
learn about the Sun and how it is celebrated
around the world, water color Saturn and learn
about its ring system, and soar through the solar
system learning about its many diverse moons and
planets. You will leave with samples of writing
and art you can use in your classroom now.

--------------------------------------------------
COVER TO COVER: BRINGING BOOKARTS TO THE CLASSROOM, Grades 4-8
Note: This workshop is limited to 25 participants)
Linda Block
Independent Elementary School, Castro Valley

Take a walk on your creative side! In this
fast-paced workshop, you will "build" a variety
of book structures: both traditional and
non-traditional, simple to more complex.
Classroom applications and curricular connections
will be highlighted. Please bring a favorite
pair of scissors and a glue stick. Feel free to
bring photos, magazine pictures, rubber stamps,
and colored pencils to embellish your work.

--------------------------------------------------
THE SUN/SHADOW MANDALA (Grades 6-12)
Kimberley Gilles
Del Amigo High School - a California Model
Continuation High School, Danville, CA

The mandala is an ancient and beautiful art form
rendered within the confines of a circle. In
this workshop, teachers will create an example of
an autobiographical mandala that uses a powerful
process of word choice and image placement to
create meaning. This project makes a great
end-of-the-year "Wow! Look at me now!" project
or a wonderful getting-to-know you project for
the fall. The mandala can also be used to
explore the "sun" and "shadow" sides of
characters in literature and history. Come
prepared to write, draw, explore, and share.

PLAYING INTO WRITING (All Grades)
John Levine
College Writing Programs, University of California, Berkeley

As much as we hate to admit it, sometimes writing
is hard. Sometimes we just don't feel like
writing. When you need a little push, the best
way into writing is through playing. Join us for
a Saturday morning of writing as we find ways to
make it fun through exercises and games that you
can use for yourself and share with your students.
