Dear Friends,
On April 14, from 9 to noon, there will be a gathering outside the
Moscone Center in San Francisco, where the National School
BoardsAssociation is holding their annual meeting. We will join
teachers, parents, administrators, school board members and students
from the south valley, the peninsula, Oakland, San Francisco and
elsewhere who want to voice theier concern over the impact NCLB is
having on education. NCLB is up for re-authorization this year and
we have the opportunity to express our opinion about the law's
effects- especially on students and the entire educational
community. Everyone is urged to come. Tulare Kings Uniserve Unit
will be providing Informational fliers and protest signs for
everyone, but this should not disuade you from making your own sign.
They have contacted the SF police and Moscone center and cleared
permission protocol.
Glenn Devoogd and I have chartered a Best Charter to take us up and
back. The cost for the charter is $1,330. The cost to you will be
$40 for the round trip. If we fill the bus we will reimburse you $10
each. The bus holds 47. If we do not fill the bus Glenn and I have
agreed to absorb the loss...unless there is some generous folks out
there who would be willing to donate a bit more or share in any
potential loss....
Glenn has said that there are 10 of you who already have said yes to
going...perhaps without this cost information...that could change
your mind...don't know. The Tulare/Kings CTA has donated $400 for
the first 10 members of the FSU Teachers for Social Justice who send
me a commitment to go e-mail.
We have to pay the $1,330 by this Wed, 4/4. Send me your committment
e-mail asap- even those 10 who have already spoken to Glenn. I still
need your committment e-mail. I will keep the list. It will be on a
first come first served basis. You can pay the $40 as we load the
bus...cash or check made out to me using my given name: Horace Lucido.
As of this writing the bus will depart from the Pep
Boys/Costco/Winco parking lot on west Shaw in the area nearest Pep
Boys at 5:00am. We plan to arrive at Moscone at 9am and remain there
until 12noon. You will have the afternoon to eat, shop, go to the
warf etc. We must leave SF promptly at 3pm to return to Fresno by
7pm. I will send another e-mail once this is confirmed and I sign the contract.
If you want an End NCLB button to wear, Susan Ohanian(
<mailto:EliminateNCLB@aol.com>EliminateNCLB@aol.com ) has them: $1
each or ten for $5. Send her your address and she will get them out quickly.
This is an opportunity to show thousands of school board members
your dissatisfaction with NCLB. F.W. de Klerk will be the general
session speaker. We need thousands out there.
Feel free to call others....parents, students, fellow teachers and
community members. Fill the bus and more.
Lets hit the road,
Rog and Glenn
