The Commission on NCLB is continuing to work hard to promote what I have
termed "NCLB on steroids." You can use the message below to check out their
75 pages of legislative language.
Their top thing is "effective teachers," defined as those who boost test
scores (except in a state that does not rely on standardized test scores but
uses richer assessments - and even then, the high stakes consequences would
likely produce lots of harmful results).
I've been told that Gates, Broad, Ed Trust and others are also big on this
and pushing hard with it in Congress. NEA is among those who are saying this
is not acceptable. But the use of test scores to rank and dismiss teachers in
Title I schools will further pressure schools to do nothing but focused on
what is tested, with all the consequent damage that has been extensively
documented for years now. Thus, preventing this must be added to the things
that need to be accomplished during reauthorization of ESEA/NCLB.
Beyond that, the Commission expands the role of testing and sanctions in many
other details.
Monty
