1999,1999,FFFFStudy: Highly qualified teachers only mediocre
Students in classrooms led by teachers labeled as highly qualified under NCLB
on average received "mediocre" instruction, according to a National Institute
of Child Health and Human Development study appearing in the March 30 issue
of the journal Science. "This pattern of instruction appears inconsistent
with aims to add depth to students' understanding," write the authors of the
study. Education Week (free to SmartBrief subscribers)
Actually, for next little while, anyone can read any article in ed week
www.edweek.org
I read the Ed Week piece - better than this blurb in that it details much
that is commonly dreary in too many classrooms.
Little doubt that high stakes testing has made many classrooms far worse than
they were, sucking all the intellectual oxygen out of the air. Test pressure
can make good teachers mediocre - this article does not really get that, but
the evidence of the conditions in a journal such as Science is important -
article is available on science website, $10.00 - I've not as yet downloaded
it. And note this report is from the NICHD that promotes direct instruction -
drill and kill - for young children learning to read.
