I'm glad to see Torri's post about organizing for--and taking risks
for--Resistance.

I naively thought that if I could get half a million teachers to
subscribe to my website, the media would have to pay attention to voices
of dissent.

Sigh.

I won't admit how far from that figure I am, though I will say reporters
do subscribe. Last week, within half an hour after I posted something, a
NY Times reporter contacted me, asking how she could get in touch with a
teacher.

I get a lot of mail from desprate parents and grandparents whose
children are being terrorized and otherwise beaten up by the schools.
Many days I am just frozen by all this. . . just feel I can't move for
the heavy gloom.

Then a note like Torri's reminds me that we must stop moaning and DO
something.

So here it is, one positive thing you can do today, and it will cost
only $16. Subscribe to /Substance/. It is the only newspaper of the
resistance out there. Yes, it is primarily concerned with Chicago, but
there is a national section, and if we had more revenue, the national
section would grow. Besides that, what happens in Chicago has a
curious/frightening way of repeating itself across the country.
Truth in advertising: I'm the National Resistance editor.

I believe that we all owe George Schmidt a whole lot more than $16 a
year because he put his job and family security on the line to expose
how rotten the standardized tests were (and are). He not only lost his
teaching job, he had to pay out enormous legal bills to defend himself
when the Chicago City schools sued him for $1.4 million. George lost his
job and was blackballed from employment in the entire Chicago metro area.

If we could find even 10,000 subscribers for Substance, we could make a
difference.

If you're already a subscriber, buy a subscription for the school
library, town library, the faculy room.. But a subscription for your
favorite Standardisto, corporate politico operate, or whomever.

I just talked to George and Sharon and Josh (soon-to-be 2). Sam,
just-turned 5, wouldn't talk because he's in deep contemplation about
what it is in the heavens that caused him to break his arm yesterday.

Susan
