Friends, Check out the movie "Freedom Writers", now playing in theaters. Through the story of a Long Beach classroom in 1994 it shows how education can be liberating and transformative, for students and teacher alike. In it, potentially fatal racial barriers are bridged by teenagers, making it a hopeful sequel to "Crash" . Beyond the poignant stories shared by students, there are many realistic touches, like how the teacher has to moonlight so she can pay out of her pocket for appropriate books and a crucial weekend field trip that her school site declines to authorize. And in the responses of the teacher's husband and two of her colleagues, we glimpse some of the biggest challenges we still face . . . .
