The following four writing workshops will be presented by the Bay Area
Writing Project:
----------------------------------------
YOU ARE WRITERS:REVISITING WRITING TO INCORPORATE NEW SKILLS AND CLARIFY
OLD IDEAS
Grades K-2
Presenter: Ysaaca Axelrod
El Monte Elementary, Concord
Kindergartners learn to write through constant teacher modeling and social
interactions. As the year progresses students are able to "revamp" their
work by elaborating on their existing work. This workshop will look at
student writing samples and discuss an effective way of getting young
writers, especially English Language Learners, to revise their writing.
-----------------------------------------
READING, WRITING AND SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNERS
Grades 3-5
Presenter: Rebeca Garcia-Gonzalez
BAWP Teacher Consultant/Writing Coach
We are taught that writing is one way to organize our ideas, but how well
can you do it when you are writing in a second language? Find out how to
scaffold writing genres for second language learners. Get them to
understand how to organize their own ideas in more complex ways. See how
authentic literature passages can supplement the OCR or HM writing
program.
-----------------------------------------
CONSTRUCTING COMPREHENSION THROUGH CREATING WRITING AND ART
Grades 6-12
Presenter: Regina Woodard, Berkeley Independent Study Program
Writing is a creative process, much like art. When the two are combined, a
more thorough expression of self is portrayed. In this workshop, we will
explore literature as a basis for creating writing, and how that writing
is used to create art as a visual artifact of comprehension.
-----------------------------------------
[TEACHERS AS WRITERS WORKSHOP]
INSPIRATION AT YOUR FINGERTIPS
Presenter: Chris DeLorenzo, University of San Francisco
Join Chris DeLorenzo of Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) to explore ways
to use everyday objects, music, and poetry to spark new writing. Together
we will use the world around us to write fresh, first drafts.
