More evidence that NCLB hasn’t worked
Sent to the Chicago Sun-Times, January 7, 2008

The Sun-Times’ commentary (“Here are three kids left
behind,” January 7) points out that since the No Child
Left Behind (NCLB) Law passed, there has been no
improvement for high schoolers in Chicago.

This isn’t the only test NCLB has failed.

Education Secretary Spellings claims that scores on
the national NAEP reading tests are at all-time highs,
but the improvement took place before NCLB was
implemented. On an international test given to fourth
graders (the PIRLS test), American children scored 542
in 2001 and 540 in 2006. NCLB hasn’t worked, despite
billions of dollars spent and an incredible amount of
time wasted in school.
