The new president of the International Reading Association, Tim Shananan, has just come out against reading. Well, I exaggerate slightly. He says its OK for kids to read at home, but not in school, because free reading eats into Instructional Time.
The reading community is outraged, but I think this is a much, much wider issue. It is another link in the chain of corporate/fascist control. Only the publishers of the programs can tell children what to read (and how). God forbid we give kids the freedom to choose their own books. Who knows; if they did that they might choose their own president.
