COME TO SACRAMENTO ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 19 (see below).
At our meeting last Thursday, the Ad Hoc Committee to Restore Local
Control/Governance to Oakland Schools, as it is now called, established 3
points of unity:
1. Immediately restore the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) to local
control/governance, so that we, the people of Oakland, can make the
decisions about our school district; and
2. Immediately freeze the sale of all OUSD property until local
control/governance has been restored; and
3. Immediately freeze spending the last $35 million from the state loan
until return of local control/governance.
School board president David Kakishiba and director Kerry Hamill will be
meeting with State Superintendent of Instruction Jack O'Connell on
Wednesday, July 19 in Sacramento to argue the case for local control. We
have emailed Sen. Perata's office to request a meeting with the Senator
for that same day so that Oakland will have a presence in Sacramento. We
might also arrange to visit Loni Hancock and Wilma Chan. We would like to
take a sizable delegation, but many people are on vacation, so if you can
possibly come to Sacramento that day, please let me know right away by
return email or phone. We should also car pool. I need a ride myself since
my AC just went out. I will let you know what time as soon as we hear from
Perata's office.
