I suppose this is the future, but it strikes me as amazingly discriminatory toward poor kids. Very few of our kids have computers at home and we didnt (when we existed) have them in classrooms yet.

ETS in conjunction with the California State Board of Education (SBE) and the California Department of Education (CDE) is undertaking a project to determine the feasibility of transitioning some of the STAR tests from the current paper based tests to an on-line implementation for students.

The first step in this endeavor is to assess the interest and previous experience with on-line testing, and the computer technology currently in use for all California school districts, County Offices of Education, and Charter Schools testing independently of their school district. The information provided to ETS will allow us to begin reporting data to the SBE & CDE about California's overall readiness to participate in internet based STAR testing.

Please click on the link below (or cut and paste the url to your browser's address line) to complete a short, four question, survey. The survey should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. The survey requests high level information about the district's computer equipment along with contact details of the individual responsible for technology within your district. This individual may be contacted in the future to participate in additional, more in depth, technical surveys. Please complete this survey to the best of your ability and as accurately as possible using the information you have readily available.

ETS requests that you complete this initial survey prior to July 31, 2006 order for us to include your district's data in the report that will be presented to the SBE & CDE in December 2006. All data will be used anonymously in the report.

If you have ideas, comments or suggestions about internet based STAR testing, or internet based testing in general, which go beyond the scope of the survey, please reply to this e-mail message. All suggestions, comments and ideas are welcomed and will be afforded careful consideration by ETS's internet based testing project team.

Thank you for your assistance in completing this survey.

Sincerely

ETS STAR Program
