Dear Friends,
George Schmidt has agreed to make the offer below to members of this
list. To get the free Substance subscription, you will need to note
to George that you are on this list. That's just to prevent
unfriendly spammers from costing Substance a lot of money.
This is a good deal from Substance which deserves support from each
of us. We need, very much, our own media.

Colleagues and friends:
1. Although many of you already subscribe to the print edition of Substance,
some don't. This summer, we are offering friends from different places a
complimentary three-month subscription to Substance so that you can
test drive our
very important newspaper.
As you know, the high stakes juggernaut we are now all facing in No Child
Left Behind began in several states in the old Confederacy and in one city
(America's most segregated) during the 1990s. Chicago, along with
Texas, Florida,
and a handful of other places, has been at the center of the
bourgeois attack on
public schools behind the screen of "standards and accountability"
since 1995.
And only Substance has been covering that attack critically since that date.
Yes. Only Substance. We exposed the union busting privatization
attacks of the
1990s and with our friends at PURE and a handful of other places (many now
defunct, having been strangled by corporate "philanthropy") exposed
the abuses
of high-stakes testing in Chicago while the corporately funded publications
(e.g., Chicago Catalyst) were twisting and turning in every
direction promoting
"school reform."
I could go on.
This summer, we are upgrading our website and preparing for our 33rd year of
continuous publication.
Let us know if you want to take a look at Substance in print, the only
independent and critical voice against corporate (and test-based)
"school reform" in
Chicago since the whole thing began here in 1995.
If you want to take advantage of this offer, please e-mail a response with:
