Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund, the San Francisco
Education Fund, and the School Redesign Network invite you to participate in
a special one-day meeting onFriday, July 20, 2007between9 a.m. and 2 p.m.at
theFirst Unitarian Church of Oakland, titled“From No Child Left Behind to
Every Child a Graduate: Connecting Local Priorities to National
Opportunities,” Bay Area Leaders Discuss the Promises of High School Reform.

0000,0000,0000The purpose of this meeting is to continue building public
understanding and support for local high school improvement and redesign
efforts as well as for an increased federal investment in our nation’s high
schools.

0000,0000,0000This meeting will feature Bay Area representatives deeply
involved in or affected by the high school improvement/reform efforts taking
place within the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD),San FranciscoUnified
School District (SFUSD), and the West Contra Costa UnifiedSchool
District(WCCUSD). These leaders will share their reform experience and
reflect upon its relevance to the federal high school reform discussion. In
addition, national experts will consider how the reauthorization of the No
Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) can potentially buttress the high school reform
efforts currently underway in the Bay Area and across the country. We are
pleased to announce that we will also be joined byU.S. Representative George
Miller (D, CA-7), Chair of the Education and Labor Committee, who will
discuss high school reform, share insight into the reauthorization of NCLB
and take questions from the audience.

speakers and participants to facilitate a rich discussion around the issue of
high school reform and the federal government’s role in supporting such
efforts. Participation in the meeting is by invitation only; we believe that
your expertise and background can greatly contribute to this important
conversation.

officials, business and civic leaders, civil rights leaders, philanthropists,
researchers, and school/district administrators.

discussion of the issues raised.

conversation among all participants. Using the microphones at their tables,
participants will discuss and respond to each other with a facilitator
assisting as needed. Participants will be encouraged to discuss both the
promising elements of high school reform in their communities and the
challenges that remain, as well as the internal and external supports and/or
pressures that would be most helpful to achieving the goal ofevery child a
graduate prepared college, work, and life. The discussion should touch upon
how participants can maintain a dialogue about reform efforts at all levels
with an emphasis on the federal level.
