Colleagues: The governor of California wants to raise state taxes on
those making more than one million per year in solve the California
budget problem. Maybe my suggestion and others like it will encourage
these millionaires to support reducing testing … (unlikely, I know).

The proposed tax increase might or might not raise a few billion
dollars. There is an easier way: Eliminate unnecessary and wasteful
testing of children. (1) dump the high school leaving exam - studies
show these kinds of exams do no good. (2) Don't test second graders on
standardized tests, it is not required by NCLB. (3) Get rid of
mandatory PE testing, which has the danger of turning PE classes into
exercise periods to prepare for the test. Over five years, these
actions will save about a billion dollars and will actually help
children.
