Lic. Vicente Fox Quesada
Presidente Constitucional de Mexico

I am horrified to learn that police have attacked the Plantón of the teachers in the Zocalo of Oaxaca.

Here in California I teach my students, some of whom are of Mexican heritage, about the history of the Mexican people and to admire their struggle for liberty and justice.

Having met the great painter David Alfaro Siqueiros and having studied the works of the muralists of the Mexican Revolution, I know that brutality brings shame and disgrace on the powerful.

Consider the example of Benito Juarez, the most illustrious son of Oaxaca. Would he be the author of such repression?

I implore you as president to intervene on behalf of the teachers and people of Oaxaca, to halt the repression, and to halt further violent and illegal actions by the governor.

As Archbishop José Luis Chávez Botello has said, the marches point out a serious problem of social health, injustices, illegality, and corruption. He asked the Lord to "move the hearts of those who make the decisions." I hope this appeal will touch your heart.
