HUNGER STRIKE AT U.S. FEDERAL BUILDING IN SAN FRANCISCO
Broad Bay Area Coalition Launches Protest To Stop
Anti-Immigrant "Specter Bill" Pending In Congress
Dolores Huerta to Kick Off Hunger Strike
Over 50 hunger strikers and community organizations will start a
seven-day protest in front of the Federal Building in San Francisco on
Tuesday, March 21 calling for fair and just immigration reform, and to
denounce Senator Arlen Specter's bill that designates all undocumented
immigrants as aggravated felons.
Specter's bill allows for the indefinite detention of non-citizens,
and criminalizes day-labor centers, churches, health clinics and all
others who serve, help or work with undocumented immigrants.
Led by the Bay Area Immigrant Rights Coalition (BAIRC), the hunger
strike places pressure on California Senator Diane Feinstein to oppose
the Specter bill. Senator Feinstein opposed the House of
Representatives version of bill which passed on December 16, 2005 as
H.R. 4437. She sits on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee which
continues debating the Specter bill this week.
Hunger strike organizers plan daily, evening vigils, a worker-focused
day on March 22, a National Day of Solidarity on March 25, and a
closing march on March 27 to deliver thousands of postcards and
petitions to Senator Feinstein. Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the
United Farm Workers of America, will kick off the hunger strike on
Tuesday, March 21.
