The tests are all state tests. Many states have opt out provisions, although Im having trouble getting an accurate list. (If you know about your state, please tell me.) NCLB requires 95% participation or its an automatic non-AYP, with all that that entails (which Im also having trouble finding out about). I know what the list of penalties is, but I dont know about whether they can take money away from districts/states. They threatened to take NYCs money if they didnt use phonics, but that was just Reading First. They threatened to take away Utah's military bases if the whole state opted out (as they were contemplating). What about Title I (the biggest)?

About NCLB: I just went to the NCLB site, found a section for asking questions, wrote down "Does a parent have the right to have his or her child opt out of any sort of NCLB related testing?"

I got a reply saying: NO ONE HAS ASKED THAT QUESTION YET.

Just that fact surprised me. Then they ask stuff about me and email and phone numbers and shoe size, no--that's being silly--they didn't ask about shoe size.

I get a reply with a number:'071015-000028' which is my reference number.
I am given a site which is about 5 feet in length:

http://answers.ed.gov/cgi-bin/education.cfg/php/enduser/ acct_login.php?p_userid=saraw1@sbcglobal.net&p_next_page=myq_upd.php&p_ iid=118607&p_created=1192461708
Then I am told that I will get my answer in 5 days.

How is that? (If the knock on the door doesn't happen first...)

I will keep you all posted. gh

Hi all,

Thought you might like to know that on Friday night (10/12/07) Susan
Ohanian and
Juanita Doyan were guests of honor at a dinner hosted in Boulder. The
event focused on
the NCLB Act and high stakes testing. We were able to raise money for
Susan's web site
and the Coalition for Better Education (in Colorado).

Everyone in attendance shared their stories. There was even a high
school student who
came with her mother, Carol Carminati, who thinks Colorado's high
stakes testing
program "stinks."

My nephew from Minnesota who is a freshman at the School of Mines (in
Golden, CO) also
thinks that the high stakes testing program in Minnesota is nuts. He
came over today to
spend a couple of nights at our home in Boulder, CO. Much of the
conversation at dinner
tonight centered around the lunacy of the NCLB Act and high stakes
testing.

Right now, I am redoing the bathroom off the bedroom, and all the
trade persons I have
spoken with also thinks Colorado's high stakes test (CSAP) sucks.

All of my three brothers also thinks the NCLB Act and high stakes
testing is stupid.

We are not alone. Somehow, we have got to get teachers and parents
standing together
against the NCLB Act and high stakes testing. Any ideas????

Yvonne Siu-Runyan, professor emerita

P.S. My nephew said that he didn't know that parents could opt their
children out of taking
their high stakes tests.
