I heard Jonathan Kozol twice this past weekend. Heres a short summary,
mostly phrases I liked.
He is marvelous talking about classrooms and kids. Not so great
politically. He is starting what he hope will be an umbrella group for
other political orgs (like Rethinking Schools). I asked him to announce
our boycott, and he didnt, either time.
He said his assistant calls some phonics woman who writes to him a lot
that Phonetic Fanatic from Phoenix.
He read some states Kindergarten standard about global marketplace blah
blah and said thats not what Ks are thinking about. Theyre thinking
about bellybuttons.
He said teachers are the front lines of American democracy.
He said we should pick battles big enough to matter but little enough
to win.
He said Andover (Eastern prep school; Bush went there) caps its classes
at 12. "If its good enough for the sons of presidents, its good enough
for the children we teach."
He variously referred to curriculum post NCLB as apartheid and
proto-military.
