Our 8th grade also reads the "dark and depressing" collection:
Of Mice and Men
To Kill A Mockingbird
Flowers for Algernon

also, tho, parts of House on Mango Street and a play based on The Miracle
Worker

lots of short stories in the Identity unit that affirm various life
choices and help students see how others have set goals and overcome
obstacles

the year often starts with a look at writing and writers -- with short
autobiographical pieces by authors about their writing process and how
they got started

hope this helps!
