Sorry to hear about your problems. Seems as though if it isn't an administrator, it is a parent. It's amazing how good they are at telling us how to teach and when to teach it. (Sorry--had to vent. My problems are with an administrator). Christopher Paul Curtis has three books that may not be as challenging, but do offer a lot of grist for discussion. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry always went well with my urbanized studetns. Al Capone Does My shirts is one I am waiting to try when I can get enough copies. This parent is in real trouble if she does not want her child to deal with any issues which might be negative.
